Turnaround times
The quoted turnaround time is from sample receipt in the laboratory, to results authorisation in the Laboratory Information Management system. The times do not include transport of specimen to the laboratory or the administrative process to print and post/email reports. Service users must allow for transport and reporting time when ordering tests.
Clinical background:
Because the symptoms during the initial phase of yellow fever are nonspecific and similar to a flu-like illness, diagnosis during this stage can be difficult. Therefore, the preliminary diagnosis is often made clinically based on the patient’s signs and symptoms, the travel history (when and where), and the related travel activities. Serological tests may demonstrate the presence of virus-specific antibodies produced in response to the infection, vaccination. Cross-reactivity with antibodies from other flaviviruses may occur. Testing will only be carried out on requests accompanied by a completed RIPL request form, including full travel details. Form is available at Rare and imported pathogens testing: form to submit sample.
