Turnaround times
The quoted turnaround time is from sample receipt in the laboratory, to results authorisation in the Laboratory Information Management system. The times do not include transport of specimen to the laboratory or the administrative process to print and post/email reports. Service users must allow for transport and reporting time when ordering tests.
Clinical background:
This is a serological assay used to detect IgM antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii. It is the diagnostic test for recent infection in the immunocompetent. IgM antibodies are produced following infection and may remain detectable for several months. IgM is not reliably detected in reactivations, and for this reason PCR testing is preferred in the immunocompromised (e.g. toxoplasma PCR in CSF in suspected toxoplasma encephalitis). Toxoplasma IgM is not reliably detected in neonates with congenital infection. Reference laboratory testing is recommended in cases of suspected congenital infection where the mother (or infant) has tested IgG positive.
