Turnaround times
The quoted turnaround time is from sample receipt in the laboratory, to results authorisation in the Laboratory Information Management system. The times do not include transport of specimen to the laboratory or the administrative process to print and post/email reports. Service users must allow for transport and reporting time when ordering tests.
Clinical background:
Thromboelastography is a novel approach to examining the interaction between clotting factors and platelets in the presence of red cells, which resembles the in-vivo situation more closely than conventional coagulation testing where clotting factors and platelet function are assayed separately in red cell free plasma. The test measures the clotting time and also the tenslie strength of the formed clot, examination of the reaction cruver produce can allow the contribution of clotting factors and platelets to be assessed and suggest the appropriate product replacement therapy in a bleeding patient
