Clinical background:
This is a PCR assay used to detect JC virus DNA. JC virus is the cause of a rare and serious condition known as Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy. This affects the brain and is normally only seen in significantly immunocompromised patients or in association with specific medications. It is associated with specific abnormalities on neuroimaging (MRI). Testing requires a CSF sample, although it should be noted that up to 20% of cases may be JC PCR negative in the CSF.
