Turnaround times
The quoted turnaround time is from sample receipt in the laboratory, to results authorisation in the Laboratory Information Management system. The times do not include transport of specimen to the laboratory or the administrative process to print and post/email reports. Service users must allow for transport and reporting time when ordering tests.
Clinical Background:
Mumps IgM may useful for the serological diagnosis of acute mumps virus infection. However, mumps IgM may be negative within the first 7 days of symptom onset, and in cases of mumps re-infection. If <3 days since symptom onset, collect only a buccal swab specimen for mumps PCR testing. may be indicated. If 3-7 days since symptom onset collect buccal swab for mumps PCR and serum for mumps IgM.

Detectable mumps IgM may be consistent with recent mumps infection. Confirmatory testing may be required.
