Turnaround times
The quoted turnaround time is from sample receipt in the laboratory, to results authorisation in the Laboratory Information Management system. The times do not include transport of specimen to the laboratory or the administrative process to print and post/email reports. Service users must allow for transport and reporting time when ordering tests.
Clinical background:
A coronavirus is one of many viruses that cause diseases in mammals and birds. In humans, coronaviruses cause respiratory tract infections that are typically mild, such as the common cold, though rarer forms such as SARS, MERS and COVID-19 can be lethal. NB: Testing is generally coordinated via Newcastle Hospitals Trust Infectious Disease Service.
Specimen container paediatric:
Contact laboratory prior to collection of samples. Upper respiratory tract swab (nose/throat/nasopharyngeal) in viral transport medium. Lower respiratory tract sample if available (Sputum, ETA or BAL).

Contact laboratory prior to collection of samples. Upper respiratory tract swab (nose/throat/nasopharyngeal) in viral transport medium. Lower respiratory tract sample if available (Sputum, ETA or BAL).

1ml respiratory secretions

Send samples to laboratory using national category B transport recommendations, If delays likely, refrigerate at 2-8 deg C
