Turnaround times
The quoted turnaround time is from sample receipt in the laboratory, to results authorisation in the Laboratory Information Management system. The times do not include transport of specimen to the laboratory or the administrative process to print and post/email reports. Service users must allow for transport and reporting time when ordering tests.
Clinical background:
Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease caused by parasitic protozoans belonging to the genus Plasmodium. Symptoms normally appear 10 to 15 days after being bitten these typically will include fever, fatigue, vomiting and headaches, in severe cases malaria can cause jaundice, seizures, coma or death. Malaria is widespread in the tropical and sub-tropical regions that exist in a broad band around the equator, which includes much of Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Latin America. In the UK it is usually found in returning travellers. There are 4 main species (P. Falciparum, P.Ovale, P.Malariae and P.Vivax) and a 5th species that is growing in incidence P.Knowlesi. The blood films will also be examined for the persence of other blood borne parasites.
