Turnaround times

Service users must allow for transport and reporting time when ordering tests.
Clinical background:
This test identifies past exposure to herpes simplex virus 1 or 2. It does not differentiate antibodies to HSV type I and type II and is of limited clinical utility. In certain situations (e.g. possible primary HSV infection in pregnancy) samples can be referred for type-specific serology to differentiate between infection caused by HSV types 1 and 2. Testing for current HSV infection requires samples to be sent for HSV PCR testing.
