Clinical background:
Ganglioside antibodies are a group of autoantibodies with specificity for antigens particularly found in peripheral nerves. They are useful in the diagnosis and classification of autoimmune peripheral neuropathies. Every antibody that you would like to be tested should be requested separately, though only one tube would be required. Antibodies to GM-1 are associated with Guillain-Barré syndrome, chronic demyelinating polyneuropathy and multifocal motor neuropathy. Antibodies to GQ1b have been associated with the Miller Fisher variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome. Antibodies to GD1a are associated with motor and sensory neuropathies, including variants of Guillain-Barré syndrome. Antibodies to GD1b are highly specific for a rare form of chronic ataxic neuropathy (CANOMAD). Other specificities may be available through referral laboratories after discussion with Immunology Clinical staff.
