Turnaround times
The quoted turnaround time is from sample receipt in the laboratory, to results authorisation in the Laboratory Information Management system. The times do not include transport of specimen to the laboratory or the administrative process to print and post/email reports. Service users must allow for transport and reporting time when ordering tests.
Clinical background:
This test is use to distinguish the different causes of galactosaemia.
Minimum volume paediatric:
0.5 mL blood in lithium heparin tube (do not centrifuge)
Minimum volume adult:
0.5 mL blood in lithium heparin tube (do not centrifuge)
Special requirements:
This test is for diagnosis of galactokinase deficiency. It is not a screening test for classical galactosaemia.
It is important to contact the laboratory before taking the sample. The sample must be arrive in the metabolic lab at the RVI before 12:00 (not on a Friday) so that it can be transported to the reference laboratory the same day and analysed within 5 days.
