Clinical background:
Factor IX (also known as Christmas Factor, after the original case) is a vitamin K sensitive coagulation protein, synthesised primarily in the liver. The gene for factor IX is on the X chromosome and the disorder deficiency produces (Haemophilia B) is a recessive X-linked bleeding disorder. Factor IX uses Factor VIII as a co-factor in the generation of Factor Xa. The PT is normal and the APTT is prolonged in cases of Factor IX deficiency.
