Turnaround times
The quoted turnaround time is from sample receipt in the laboratory, to results authorisation in the Laboratory Information Management system. The times do not include transport of specimen to the laboratory or the administrative process to print and post/email reports. Service users must allow for transport and reporting time when ordering tests.
Clinical background:
Requests for ENA will be tested using multiplex technology on the BioPlex 2200 for the following antibodies, which are reported as Negative or Positive: Ro52 and Ro60 antibodies (speckled ANA pattern) – associated with Sjogren’s, SLE, Cutaneous lupus, neonatal lupus and congenital complete heart block. La antibodies (speckled ANA pattern) – associated with Sjogren’s, SLE and neonatal lupus. Centromere B Antibodies – found in 70-80% of cases of limited cutaneous scleroderma (CREST syndrome). Sm antibodies (speckled ANA pattern) – specific for SLE, common only in West Indians. SmRNP and RNP 68 antibodies (speckled ANA pattern) – associated with undifferentiated connective tissue disease (UCTD) and SLE. In SLE RNP antibodies occur with ds-DNA antibodies; in UCTD only RNP antibodies detected. Scl-70 antibodies (speckled ANA pattern) – associated with diffuse cutaneous scleroderma, especially in those patients with severe skin disease, musculoskeletal and cardiopulmonary disease. Jo-1 antibodies (ANA staining may not be seen, cytoplasmic staining may occur) – found in 25% of adult patients with autoimmune myositis and in 68% patients with anti-synthetase syndrome (myositis, arthritis, raynauds, interstitial lung disease). Results for anti-double-stranded DNA antibodies, Chromatin antibodies and Robosomal P protein antibodies are also produced when this method is used and these results will be given alongside those quoted above. PM-Scl antibodies (nucleolar ANA pattern) associated with polymyositis scleroderma overlap syndromes. Needs to be requested separately and is sent to an external laboratory for testing. Other specificities may be available through referral laboratories after discussion with Immunology Clinical staff.
