Turnaround times
The quoted turnaround time is from sample receipt in the laboratory, to results authorisation in the Laboratory Information Management system. The times do not include transport of specimen to the laboratory or the administrative process to print and post/email reports. Service users must allow for transport and reporting time when ordering tests.
Clinical background:
Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is a calculated parameter using the serum creatinine concentration in the CKI-EPI based calculation. Serum [creatinine] can be used together with demographic information (e.g. age, race, sex) to calculate an estimated GFR (eGFR).
In the UK, it is recommended that eGFR should be based on the 2009 CKD-Epi creatinine equation formula. However, this is not applicable to several clinical situations e.g. acute kidney disease, children, individuals with muscle – wasting etc. In patients with CKD stages 1 – 3 (i.e. eGFR ≥60 mL/min) measurements should be made 6- or at least 12- monthly according to whether eGFR is changing by more or less than 15 mL/min, respectively, between successive measurements; in patients with more advanced CKD, the corresponding figures are 3- and 6- monthly.
Gender Serum creatinine Equation for estimating GFR using CKD-Epi creatinine equation (2009):
- Female ≤62 mmol/l eGFR = 144x(SCr/0.7)-0.329 x 0.993Age x 1.018
- Female >62 mmol/l eGFR = 144x(SCr/0.7)-1.209 x 0.993Age x 1.018
- Male ≤80 mmol/l eGFR = 141x(SCr/0.9)-0.411 x 0.993Age
- Male >80 mmol/l eGFR = 141x(SCr/0.9)-1.209 x 0.993Age
Specimen container paediatric:

Specimen container adult:
Serum-SST
Minimum volume paediatric:
0.5ml blood for Creatinine
Minimum volume adult:
0.5ml blood for Creatinine
Sample stability:
For Creatinine- after separation:
- at +15° to +25°C: 7 days
- at +2° to +8°C: 7 days
- at -15° to -25°C: 3 months
Reference ranges:
>90 ml/min/1.73m2 – Normal GFR, Should be considered normal unless there is other evidence of renal disease
60 – 89 ml/min/1.73m2 – Should be considered normal unless there is other evidence of renal disease
30 – 59 ml/min/1.73m2 – Consistent with moderate renal impairment. Recommend repeat U/E within 5 days if reduced eGFR not already known
15 – 29 ml/min/1.73m2 – Consistent with severe renal impairment. Recommend repeat U/E within 5 days if reduced eGFR not already known. Urgent or non-urgent Nephrology referral may be indicated
<15 ml/min/1.73m2 – Consistent with established renal failure. Recommend urgent referral to Nephrology
