Turnaround times
The quoted turnaround time is from sample receipt in the laboratory, to results authorisation in the Laboratory Information Management system. The times do not include transport of specimen to the laboratory or the administrative process to print and post/email reports. Service users must allow for transport and reporting time when ordering tests.
Clinical background:
A complete 24 hour urine collection and a serum sample are required to calculate the rate of creatinine clearance, a measure for approximating the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), as an assessment of the excretory function of the kidneys. It is used in situations where the eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) is unreliable.
Specimen container paediatric:
Serum (SST or plain tube) AND 24 hour urine collection (plain bottle)
Specimen container adult:
Serum (SST or plain tube) AND 24 hour urine collection (plain bottle)
Minimum volume paediatric:
0.5 mL blood
24 hour urine collection
Minimum volume adult:
1 mL blood
24 hour urine collection
Special requirements:
Blood sample to be taken during the 24 hours when urine is collected.
