Clinical background:
Apolipoprotein A1 is the apolipoprotein associated with HDL. It functions as an activator of lecithin cholesterol acetyltransferase, which is involved in lipid uptake.
Specimen container paediatric:
Serum (SST or plain tube)
Specimen container adult:
Serum (SST or plain tube)
Minimum volume paediatric:
0.5 mL blood
Minimum volume adult:
1 mL blood
Sample stability:
Unseparated sample: unknown
Separated sample: 24 hours at 15-25°C, 8 days at 2-8°C, 3 months at -20°C
Transport requirements:
Ambient temperature
Interpretation:
Decreased levels are associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis. Increased levels appear to exert a protective effect. Markedly decreased Apolipoprotein A1 is associated with Tangiers disease.
