Turnaround times
The quoted turnaround time is from sample receipt in the laboratory, to results authorisation in the Laboratory Information Management system. The times do not include transport of specimen to the laboratory or the administrative process to print and post/email reports. Service users must allow for transport and reporting time when ordering tests.
Clinical background:
This test is a special stain used to identify the presence of mycobacteria. A positive stain is a rapid test that can indicate possible infection with mycobacteria but which must always be confirmed by cultural methods. AFB microscopy without culture has a poor negative predictive value. TB/Mycobacterial Culture is performed along with AFB microscopy this has a much higher negative predictive value.
