Turnaround times
The quoted turnaround time is from sample receipt in the laboratory, to results authorisation in the Laboratory Information Management system. The times do not include transport of specimen to the laboratory or the administrative process to print and post/email reports. Service users must allow for transport and reporting time when ordering tests.
Clinical background:
Activated Protein C resistance is a haemostatic disorder characterised by poor anticoagulant response to activated protein C (APC), this results in an increased thrombotic risk. It may be acquired or congenital. The best known and most common congenital form is due to a mutation in the Factor V molecule known as Factor V Leiden. The assay is a clot based screening test and if positive, a pcr is performed for the Factor V Leiden mutation. Factor V Leiden is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner and the thrombotic risk is increased in Heterozygotes and greatly increased in Homozygotes. Pregnancy and It is the most common inherited thrombotic risk factor with up to 5% of the population being Heterozygous. Oestrogen containing contraceptives or HRT are signifcant thrombotic risk factors for DVT and PE in individuals with Factor V Leiden mutation. This assay is part of the Thrombophilia screen.
