Clinical background:
This is a set panel of tests performed on individuals to determine if they have any of the alterations in the Haemostatic system known to be associated with an increased risk of thrombosis. The full thrombophilia screen consists of a clotting screen, Protein C and S assays, Antithrombin-III assay, APCR, DRVV Ratio, Anticardiolipin assays and a pcr for the Factor II mutation that is associated with increased thrombotic risk, a PCR for factor V Leiden will also be performed on samples with a positive APCR. Requests for Thrombophilia screening are reviewed by a Consultant Haematologist before testing to ensure the appropriate tests are performed in line with current BSH guidelines, meaning that the full panel is not always performed on every request.
