NuTH provides a regional centralised autopsy service for a number of coroner’s jurisdictions and is increasing service year on year as a specialist provider. We also undertake PMCT scanning that may result in a reduction in need for full invasive post mortems. We work collaboratively with our bereavement and chaplaincy teams to support viewings of deceased relatives by families and loved ones. We meet regularly with Coroners and service users, engage with funeral directors and sustain a timely service, mindful of the sensitive needs for deceased and their bereaved relatives. Contact is directly made by the Medical Examiner office.
The post-mortem examination is always consented, whether hospital or coroner referral. It plays a useful role in confirming clinical diagnoses and determining unexpected pathologies in relation to cause of death.
We are the regional centre for the perinatal post-mortem service. Our Trust provides this service for all NHS Trusts in the NENC Pathology network.
Viewing times are currently more restricted due to pressures in covering out of hours and weekends.
The mortuaries normal working hours are from 08:30 to 16:30 Monday to Friday.
Mortuary teams work at both RVI and Freeman sites. On call provision is provided to support all needs as required, for contacts including on call please see our contact page.
