Turnaround times
The quoted turnaround time is from sample receipt in the laboratory, to results authorisation in the Laboratory Information Management system. The times do not include transport of specimen to the laboratory or the administrative process to print and post/email reports. Service users must allow for transport and reporting time when ordering tests.
Clinical background:
Immunophenotyping by flow cytometry is an essential component of the diagnostic work-up of many haematological malignancies including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. This involves the use of fluorescently labelled antibodies that bind to antigens on the surface of white cells, which are then detected by the flow cytometer. The pattern of expression, along with morphology, is used to determine the cell linage and maturity, in many cases providing vital diagnostic information, from which genetic assays are performed to obtain further classification and prognostic information. Requests for flow cytometry in the context of Haematological Malignancy should be requested via the Northern England Haemato-Oncology Diagnostic Services (NEHODS).
